Memorial Field Gets a Long Awaited Renovation
In the fall of 2017, the Bellarmine football and women's soccer teams took to Memorial Field to begin their practices and games. However, this year was a little different. In the past, there was a strategic rotation for the way that teams could use Memorial Field to ensure prime grass condition. Despite the best efforts of the maintenance crew, it was inevitable that around the end of October, parts of the field would be a muddy mess due to excessive rain, overuse, and drainage issues on the field. The only clear way to solve this annual dilemma was to replace the grass field with new synthetic field turf.
Normally this would be quite an undertaking for a private school that only recently finished its largest capital campaign in school history, but due to the generosity of the Names family as well as the foresight of the Bellarmine Boosters, the project was fully funded in record time. Not only was the grass removed and replaced with the latest field turf technology, but the sidelines were expanded, the visitor bleachers were replaced to match the home side, and the general aesthetic of the area around the field was drastically improved.
It's an important milestone for Bellarmine Athletics, as it marks the first time that every sport is able to practice and play home games at Bellarmine. In years prior, teams such as lacrosse and soccer found themselves practicing indoors, or being forced off campus to play. If you have an opportunity this spring, we invite you to come watch our men's soccer team, as well as our men's and women's lacrosse teams as they take to the new turf field!
